Adult Catechism

Adult Catechism

For those who wish to pursue membership in our congregation and who are coming from either no faith background or from denominations other than the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, our pastor offers Adult Catechism classes regularly. It is a journey of faith that last for approximately three months. The person undergoing the class is called an “Inquirer.” The Inquirer is enrolled with a sponsoring family. A sponsor is really a personal friend to the Inquirer.

The classes are built around introducing a person to the Christian faith and specifically what it means to be a Lutheran Christian. If a person has never been baptized, the classes will prepare an adult candidate for baptism and then membership in the congregation. If an Inquirer has already been baptized, he or she is essentially being prepared for what we call “reaffirmation of baptism,” that is to say, they are reaffirming their Christian faith to be lived out as an active member of the congregation.

The classes feature the following topics:

  • Who is God?
  • What is the Bible?
  • The Proper Distinction between the Law and the Gospel
  • The Doctrine of Creation
  • The Life of Jesus Christ
  • The Holy Spirit and the Church
  • Prayer
  • The Sacraments
  • Baptism
  • The Lord’s Supper
  • The Office of the Keys and Ministry
  • The Church Year
  • The Life of Martin Luther
  • The Christian Life and Stewardship

Those who are members of a Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregation and are desiring to transfer into our congregation, the classes are offered, but not necessary. A transfer orientation is offered instead which is a single meeting. Thos who join the congregation this way become members through “transfer.”

We invite you to consider becoming a member of our Christian family here at Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church.
